Automated teller machines (ATMs) are computerised machines that can be used to complete monetary transactions, such as balance checks or withdrawals, in the HD Universe of the Grand Theft Auto series. Although ATMs have existed since Grand Theft Auto III, they are interactive only in Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, and Grand Theft Auto Online.

Description

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, ATMs largely serve no purpose. In the mission Small Town Bank, CJ has to destroy the machines inside Palomino Creek Bank to get to their contents, when he and Catalina hold up the bank.

A functional ATM is located at the Venturas Steaks Steakhouse on the Old Venturas Strip. Pedestrians who walk by will stop and can be seen withdrawing money. Killing them shortly afterwards can result in them dropping more money than normal.

Grand Theft Auto IV is the first game of the Grand Theft Auto series where ATMs are interactive, although they serve little purpose as they only show the player's balance, which is already displayed within the game's HUD. ATMs in Grand Theft Auto IV can be found in various locations throughout Liberty City, such as near shopping complexes, hospitals and other areas useful to the player, and are operated by the Bank of Liberty. ATMs are either standalone or wall-mounted.

Fleeca ATMs

In Grand Theft Auto V, ATMs play a similar role to their GTA IV depiction. Michael, Franklin and Trevor can visit an ATM to check their money and view their transaction history. The player can also use their in-game cell phone or laptop to enter their bank accounts via the Internet, but it depends on the bank account they own (Franklin owns a bank account with Fleeca, Michael with Maze Bank and Trevor with the Bank of Liberty).

In the game, there are also random events that involve the player pursuing a robber after he steals the wallet of a pedestrian while he was withdrawing money from the ATM.

ATMs can be found in many locations throughout San Andreas, outside Fleeca, Maze Bank or Lombank branches, and in places like the Vanilla Unicorn, Maze Bank Arena, or the ground floor of some buildings in Los Santos.

Grand Theft Auto Online

In Grand Theft Auto Online, ATMs now have a prominent role. The player can visit an ATM to deposit their collected money into their bank account to prevent it from being stolen by other players. The player has up to six options of set amounts to deposit money ($50, $500, $2,500, $10,000, $100,000, and $10,000,000) shown by how much a player has; for example if one has $1,000, only the amounts up to $500 are shown. The sixth option will either show $10,000,000 or the amount the player has if it's between $100,000 and $10,000. Since places such as Ammu-Nation stores and real estate brokers accept debit cards, it is not necessary to withdraw large sums of cash from ATMs in order to make big purchases. The player is not allowed to deposit less than $50, though this can be circumvented by withdrawing $50 or more, then depositing the new sum.

The player can also use ATMs to view their purchase history like in GTA V. It is best to visit ATMs when not around many other players in GTA Online, for if the player visits an ATM, they are vulnerable to attacks. The player's money can then be stolen by other players, making the use of ATMs in the game very risky. The safest option is to deposit and withdraw money using the cell phone or a laptop, from Maze Bank's website or activating Passive Mode (in the enhanced version, as players are fully immune to any sort of attacks).

The player can find the closest ATM with the Quick GPS option of the Interaction Menu, holding the Select (PlayStation 3) button (PlayStation 3), the Back (Xbox) button (Xbox 360) or the List button (Xbox One), or by pressing the PS4 Touch Pad (PlayStation 4).
