Gerald is an unseen character in Grand Theft Auto V and a main character in Grand Theft Auto Online.
He is voiced by Douglas Powell Ward.
History
Background
Gerald joined The Families at some point prior to 2013. While living in an apartment in Chamberlain Hills, Los Santos, he started dealing drugs for them. He became a close associate with a fellow gang member, Lamar Davis, whom he often stole cars with. At some point, he gained a girlfriend and bought a lowrider, the latter of which was eventually stolen. Gerald was considerably fat at one point, but lost weight.
Events of Grand Theft Auto Online in 2013
In 2013, Lamar introduces the protagonist to Gerald soon after the protagonist moves to Los Santos. Gerald then begins contacting the player, often giving missions that consist of stealing drugs from other dealers and gangs – usually the Vagos or The Lost MC.
Later on, after a lowrider delivery set up by Lamar for Families OG Vernon goes south, Gerald is arrested. The police attempt to transport Gerald by air out of Los Santos International Airport, but the player, sent by Lamar, is able to rescue him. At a later point, the player steals lowriders from a Vagos car meet and brings them to Gerald's apartment.
Events of Grand Theft Auto V
While Gerald doesn't physically appear in GTA V, he is seemingly still angry at Lamar for his prior actions, as he posts on Lamar's Lifeinvader wall, telling him to stay away from him.[2]
Events of Grand Theft Auto Online (after 2013)
The Diamond Casino Heist
In 2020, Gerald comes to believe that an economic recession will soon hit Los Santos. He recruits the GTA Online Protagonist to help accelerate his drug dealing to build a "retirement fund". His missions generally involve attacking rival drug dealers, stealing their drugs, and/or delivering to buyers.
Los Santos Drug Wars
In 2023, Gerald texts the GTA Online Protagonist to inform them of new Stash Houses appearing throughout Southern San Andreas and suggest that they deal with the competition. If the protagonist successfully raids a Stash House, Gerald will send them a message to confirm that he had the stolen supplies delivered to one of their businesses.
Character
Personality
Gerald is generally quiet and reserved in person, though not un-confident. He often speaks in short words or sentences like "Nice" or "All right", though generally writes longer text messages.
He appears to be a paranoid person with difficulty trusting new associates, as he hesitates before meeting the player, and often tells them to keep their mouth shut after delivering drugs to him. Gerald is more serious than Lamar when it comes to business, and appears to get annoyed by him. In general, he seems to have a low opinion of Lamar and speaks badly of him to the player over the phone.
Appearance
Gerald is an African-American man of an average height, and is slightly overweight. He wears a white fedora hat, sunglasses, a black & silver necklace with an "LS" pendant, a black t-shirt, and blue jeans. Occasionally, Gerald may appear without his hat, revealing his buzz cut hair.

Trivia
- When delivering drugs to Gerald, he sometimes appears with his sunglasses and hat removed. Whether this was intentional or a glitch is unknown.[3]
- Ironically, Gerald's apartment has signs that read "No Weapons" and "No Drug Deals".[4]
- Gerald has a loose resemblance to Big Smoke from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Both men have similar heavy builds, attire, affilation to the Families and involvement in cocaine distribution. However, Gerald seems loyal to the Families, deals in other substances as well, and does not share Big Smoke's larger-than-life personality.
- Gerald used to be overweight, and owned a lowrider which was stolen and sold to Mexicans by Lamar.[1]
- Another possible reason for the post on Lifeinvader is that Gerald could have discovered that Lamar stole his car during the events of Grand Theft Auto V.

G was a fat motherfucker back then, and that ride dropped an extra six inches whenever he got in. Scraped along the ground, sparks comin' up out the back. And he had this bitch with a big ol' ass. Man, that bitch was sexy as fuck. She get in the car with him and that motherfucker wouldn't even move. Tires just spinning on the spot, smoking like a motherfucker. And if it did get goin' it'd take this big ass scrape out of the ground, like a big trail like a plane crash. Dude, did that car get low. It was laid like a motherfucker, ma n***a. Damn. Hey, don't tell G but I stole that motherfucker and sold it to the Mexicans. Hey, a n***a gotta get in where he fit in. You think that's why G's so pissed, or is it all this other shit?”—Lamar during Peace Offerings.
